Social & Therapeutic Horticulture (STH), also known as Horticulture Therapy is a practise where trained practitioners use gardens and gardening activities to support and improve a person’s health and wellbeing.

Since 2019, MUD has successfully delivered multiple (STH) programmes, working with diverse communities struggling with their mental and physical health and addressing a wide range of individual needs. Our STH programmes are designed to provide holistic support and therapy, grounded in the understanding that a person-centred approach is key to achieving the best outcomes. Recognising that individual and group needs differ, our skilled STH practitioners tailor their sessions accordingly—whether through small, focused groups that address similar needs, or larger groups that prioritise social interaction and collective learning experiences.

Gardening offers a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional health benefits that contribute to overall well-being. These benefits stem from the physical activity involved, the connection to nature, and the sense of purpose and achievement it can provide.

Here are some key health benefits:

  • Mental Health: It reduces stress, improves mood, and helps with mindfulness, while lowering symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • Social Connection: Gardening fosters a sense of community, combats social isolation, and encourages relationship-building.

  • Emotional Well-being: It boosts self-esteem, provides a sense of responsibility, and offers therapeutic benefits through nurturing and creativity.

  • Cognitive Benefits: Gardening enhances memory, concentration, and problem-solving, and promotes lifelong learning and environmental awareness.

If you, or a community you are involved with could benefit from participating in one of our STH programmes, or if you would like more information please reach out by emailing volunteer@wearemud.org.

“I have personal experience of seeing MUD’s programme delivery in action and have been able to discuss the positive, life changing experiences they have given their participants. What sets MUD apart is their ambition and values to grow a diverse, healthy, accessible community lead space and their desire to make society a fairer and just place by reducing health inequalities through food growing and horticultural therapy”

Wellbeing Session Attendee

“I feel like I’ve achieved something. Knowing that I’ve made a difference. It’s been years since I’ve worked or done anything. I like to go home and see the plants I’ve taken with me and see the growth and I feel proud.”
